Lip injections enhance the contour and fullness of lips for a younger, healthier appearance. Well-defined, plump lips are subject to sagging as we age. The colored portion of the lips thins out and the arch of the upper lip (Cupid’s bow) flattens. This problem is especially noticeable in women with naturally thin lips. The procedure is appropriate for patients who wish to enhance the lips they are born with and for patients who wish to restore the lips aging takes away.
Facial plastic surgeon Dr. Slupchynskyj offers a variety of techniques for lip enhancement including Collagen, Fat Grafts, Dermal Fat Grafts, Alloderm®, and Restylane®. The materials vary in permanence and are listed in order from shortest to longest. After carefully discussing your goals and expectations, your surgeon can recommend the appropriate method for you. This procedure is often performed in combination with Rhinoplasty, Cheek Augmentation, and/or Chin Augmentation.

Collagen injections are made of highly purified bovine collagen. Patients receiving collagen must be administered a skin test prior to treatment. After successfully passing the skin test, patients may begin the treatment series. The material generally lasts for three to five months, but requires periodic touch ups for maximum results.
With Fat Grafts, fat is withdrawn from the patient’s body and reinjected with a syringe. When using the patient’s own tissue, an incision is made from a donor site elsewhere on the body and gently suctioned out. The material is processed before it is reintroduced into the body. Because the material is taken from the patients own body there is no risk of infection, allergic reaction, or migration. The natural tissue remains soft for a natural feel.

Dermal Fat Grafts are also taken from the patient’s own body; however, a Dermal Fat Graft is made up of fat with deeper layers of skin still attached. This allows the material to reabsorbed into the body more slowly than Fat Grafts. Again, the material is processed before it is reintroduced into the body and poses no risk of infection, allergic reaction, or migration.
Alloderm® consists of human skin and fatty tissue obtained from tissue banks. This material like the patients own fat remains soft after implantation and does not migrate. It offers the look and feel of fat grafts and no risk of allergic reaction. Alloderm® is reabsorbed into the body more slowly than collagen and eliminates the need for incisions on the body.

Radiesse® is a soft tissue material that lasts up to 12 months. Dr. Slupchynskyj was interviewed on NY 1 for this filler.
