botoxWithout a doubt, BOTOX® is one of the most popular non-surgical cosmetic procedures in the country. It’s not without its own fair share of controversy, though. Despite its popularity, there are still individuals who are hesitant to try this anti-aging treatment.

One way to eliminate your fear about this procedure is to understand what BOTOX® is and what it does. Knowledge eliminates fear, so we are going to debunk the common myths that surround BOTOX®. By doing this, you’ll be able to make a well-informed decision about this minimally invasive procedure.

Myth 1: It will make your face look frozen.

Truth: This injectable treatment works by blocking the transmission of nerve impulses to the target muscles to keep them from contracting. It doesn’t make your face feel or look frozen, however. As long as the person administering the procedure is an experienced practitioner, your facial expressions will remain intact.

Myth 2: BOTOX® injections are dangerous.

Truth: It’s perfectly safe. BOTOX® is an FDA-approved treatment that contains a low dose of botulinum toxin, which doesn’t cause severe impairment to the central nervous system. As long as the doctor administering it is experienced and uses only genuine BOTOX®, the treatment is safe.

Myth 3: It’s only for wrinkles.

Truth: While BOTOX® is designed as an anti-aging treatment, there are other benefits you can get with the injection. The FDA recently approved BOTOX® for the treatment of chronic migraine headaches. It’s also being used as another option to treat excessive sweating, especially in the underarms. The results may not be permanent, but patients can find relief from their headaches and sweaty armpits for at least two to six months.

Myth 4: BOTOX® is intensely painful.

Truth: Discomfort will always be associated with any type of injectable treatment, but that doesn’t mean the pain is unbearable. A fine needle is used to inject BOTOX® and doesn’t penetrate the deeper layers of the skin, making discomfort minimal. In some patients, they describe the sting of injection similar to a mosquito bite.

Myth 5: It’s addicting.

Truth: Once the effects of BOTOX® wear off, your face will go back to how it looked before you had the treatment. It won’t make your face look worse than before. Patients just love their rejuvenated facial appearance that they continue getting the treatment.

Now that the common BOTOX® myths are debunked, you can now make a better decision about using this as an anti-aging treatment.
