Facelift Procedure Information.
More and more men are having plastic surgery to enhance their appearance than ever before...
Often times, when people think of Facelift Surgery, they immediately assume it's reserved for women, celebrities and models – that's simply not the case any longer. Businessmen, baby boomers and even the average "guy's guy" have become classic examples of men choosing to have cosmetic surgery in my practice.
Statistics show that the American male grooming market is worth approximately $3.5 billion.
Men are quitting smoking, eating healthier foods and exercising more than ever before. However, many men who choose plastic surgery usually don't look as good as they feel.
Men well into their 40's, 50's and 60's feel the need to enhance their appearance to appear more youthful. Facial Plastic surgery has become more popular with men in order to deal with the change and maintenance of their appearance.
The number of men receiving facelifts has greatly increased in the past ten years. According to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS), the number of cosmetic procedures for men increased over 88 percent from 1997. That's more than 750,000 cosmetic procedures, according to the ASAPS. The top 10 surgical procedures for men over the past two years have been the following:
- Facelift
- Rhinoplasty
- Lip Augmentation
- Ear Surgery
- Soft Tissue Fillers
- Botox®™
- Eyelid Surgery
- Dermabrasion
- Laser Hair Removal
- Laser Treatment of Leg Veins
What are the Benefits of Facial Rejuvenation for Men?
A Facelift can restore a person's sense of youthful vitality and energy. I see patients who have taken great care of their health over the years, and feel vibrant, but see a face in the mirror, which does not reflect that vitality. Facial surgery for men is similar to surgery for women, and is done for many of the same reasons, but there are some differences.
When to have Facelift Surgery
A man who has cosmetic facial surgery will typically be about ten years older than a woman having the same surgery. Because men are somewhat older when they have this procedure, the effects of aging on the face are more pronounced, such as sagging upper eyelids, frown lines, puffy bags under the eyes, and sagging cheek skin, or jowls. Consequently, the longer a man waits to have cosmetic surgery, the more extensive the surgery can become. I have seen some male patients who generally approach facial surgery with a different mindset than women. Men prefer a much more subtle change in appearance; they want to look youthful and energetic without drawing too much attention to their face. This can be accomplished by having surgery on one specific area at a time, the eyes for example. An Upper and Lower Blepharoplasty (Eyelid Surgery), can take years off a man's, or woman's face, by opening up the eye area and eliminating that tired, sad or angry appearance.
Men have Thicker Skin
Men's facial skin is thicker and oilier than women's and this makes manual dissection during an operation more difficult. Men also have more blood vessels in their face than women, so there may be a bit more bleeding in a male facelift and possibly a longer recovery period.
Augmentation Surgery in Combination with a Facelift
Augmentation of existing bone structure is very popular with many of my male and female facelift patients. For a man, or woman, having a Jaw Augmentation to increase the size of the chin, or Cheekbone Augmentation can be done during normal facial plastic surgery, and can help bring about balance and fullness to a face. Lip Augmentation and Rhinoplasty are other procedures that I have been asked to perform in conjunction with a Facelift.
I regularly perform one or more procedures in conjunction with a lift, depending upon an individual's specific aging; they include Cheek and Jaw Augmentations, Brow Lifts (as a Facelift truly does not lift the upper third of the face), Upper and Lower Blepharoplasty, Fat Grafting, Lip Augmentation and Rhinoplasty.
How to Get the Best Cosmetic Surgery
Healthy, middle-aged men and women who have careers in businesses that attract younger workers are turning to plastic surgery for just that little nip or tuck here and there to give them a younger, more vigorous appearance. Men and women who have lost weight, but are unable to get rid of that last bit of sagging skin, no matter where it is on the body, may find cosmetic surgery to be their best option. If you are fit and full of life and vitality, but your outward appearance comes across as tired and worn out, then consider cosmetic surgery as reflection of how you really feel on the inside.
Prior to cosmetic surgery, make sure you do your homework and conduct extensive research. This is your face, after all. Only consult with a qualified Board Certified Facial Plastic Surgeon that truly specializes in the type of surgery you want, and who has proven results. There are plenty of doctors out there trying to claim they achieve the same results that an expertly trained and experienced Facial Plastic Surgeon can only produce. These doctors are often trained as internists, dermatologists and dentists and surgeons who perform general body plastic surgery such as breast surgery. I cannot emphasize this enough; do your homework and research physician credentials and training. It is imperative that you get patient references from any doctor you consult with, and speak to only those patients who have experienced and undergone the same procedure(s) you are considering.
