Vanishing Taboos : As More and More Women & Men Choose to Undergo Cosmetic Surgery There is Less and Less to Hide

Since the dawn of the Plastic Surgery industry, Plastic Surgeons have made a business out of literally giving their patients less and less to hide.  Whether it be performing a breast implant operation that made someone feel confident to wear form fitting shirts or a Rhinoplasty that inspired more picture sharing for someone who is online dating, for the most part those who have achieved a look they are satisfied with tend to assume spotlights more frequently.

However, this is quite the opposite for many when it concerns sharing the news that a cosmetic surgery is what boosted their confidence levels.  There have been and still are a number of taboos surrounding plastic surgery.  Recipients of these surgeries want to show off results, however more often than not they would like us to imagine these results materialized out of nowhere.  They would prefer that everyone just forget all about what they looked like several months earlier.

Good news for Cosmetic Surgeons who may be tired of living in this closet.  Recent statistics suggest that this past trend toward secrecy may reverse, due to sheer numbers of those who are undergoing cosmetic enhancements and as one source suggests, the lack of restrictions on advertising in the industry which has led to more frequent and potent ads for things like Breast Implants and Botox.

Cosmetic Surgery advertising was the recent topic du jour for a British publication, The Guardian in its discussion of the “normalization” of Plastic Surgery that seems to be occurring. They suggest that it may be both an increase in cosmetic surgery advertising as well as a shift in the tone of the advertising that are partly responsible. Content is now tending to mimic advertising in other established factions of the beauty industry, such as make-up or diet fads.

Recent industry advertising content plays upon notoriously prevalent female insecurities (90% of all Cosmetic Surgery is still undergone by females) like coping with postpartum birth weight or pleasing their male counterparts and securing more dates.  It is also suggested that the ads attempt to create a sense of urgency in the mind of the viewer so that they may be less likely to consider surgery at a slower pace.

At the end of the day, The Guardian summarizes that this all comes together to create an unrealistic view of Plastic Surgery as “surgery”.  People are starting to confuse running to the store to buy a new lipstick with running to their surgeon to have breast implants.  Is this a fact?  This is one perspective.  However, of course there are others that exist and are valid.

Others may point to cultural perspectives.  For example, amongst latin american women there has never been such a taboo.  As one recent interviewee in a NY Times  article about Ethnicity and Plastic Surgery states: “We latinas define ourselves with our bodies. We always have curves”. The Examiner presents a concurring view in its review of attitudes toward plastic surgery in Latin America, suggesting there is more stigma associated with not having surgery than there is with having had numbers of them.  In Latin America stepping out quickly to see your surgeon has never been viewed as a potential issue, it is expected.  Latina women would ask quite the opposite question of, “What’s all the fuss?!”.

We would be interested to learn more about different cultural and business or advertising related perspectives on the “normalization” of cosmetic procedures.  Thoughts and opinions on this hot topic are perfect fodder for this week’s thoughts and reflections.  Many people’s confidence and self-esteem levels have been raised considerably after undergoing a longed for cosmetic surgery.  Regardless your level of comfortability with talking freely about Plastic Surgery, you still may be contemplating it.  If you have been considering surgery, the first step is a consultation with a Board Certified Facial Plastic Surgeon with experience and a tacit understanding of aesthetics.

Most Popular Cosmetic Surgery Procedures for Men

Say the words “Cosmetic Surgery” and people’s minds usually go directly to women: BOTOX®™, Facelifts, and Breast Augmentation. But, we know from our successful New York Plastic Surgery Practice, men are most certainly embracing the power of surgical advancements to enhance their looks and physique. Just take a look at this list, The 10 Most Popular Cosmetic Surgeries For Men,” published on therichest.com. Excluding a few body-based procedures, such as Liposuction or Breast Reduction, the bulk of the procedures requested by men revolve around anti-aging procedures for a more youthful and vital appearance, or to correct facial features — like the nose or ears — that have plagued them for years.

So, let’s take a look at some of the most popular Plastic Surgery procedures that appeal to men.

Rhinoplasty. Rhinoplasty is one of the most common Cosmetic Surgery procedures requested by men of all ages. The nose is a funny thing — even the slightest amount of disproportion can affect the way a person views himself or herself in the mirror. This is especially true if an individual was teased about the size or shape of their nose when they were a child or adolescent. Rhinoplasty procedures are performed to alter the size and/or shape of the nose in a way that is in better proportion with existing facial features. Dr. Slupchynskyj has revolutionized Rhinoplasty procedures, specifically Ethnic Rhinoplasty, with hisSLUPimplant™, which uses a custom carved silastic implant.

Otoplasty. This is one of the cosmetic procedures that is actually requested more frequently by men than by women. There are several reasons for this. The first of which is that men usually wear their hair shorter than women, which makes their ears more prominent. Otoplasty, also called Ear Pinning (although no pinning is involved), can be used to change the shape of the ear, or it can be used to prevent the ears from sticking out perpendicularly to the head. Again, facial proportion is the key. The doctor will use precise facial measurements to determine the size and shape that works best with your natural features.

Brow Lifts. One of the first signs of aging in a man are the brow lines, or brow sag, that begins to appear as skin elasticity decreases with age. This can be more dramatic in men due to their naturally prominent brow lines and shaggier eyebrows. Over time, the brow line can droop significantly, causing a hooded look as the eyebrows begin to sag over the upper eyelids. A Brow Lift can be used to gently raise the eyebrow line, which helps to alleviate the hooded look and will ease wrinkle lines. This procedure is often paired with an Eyelid Lift, to help remove excess eyelid skin that can begin to sag both above and below the eyes. BOTOX®™ injections can be used to further diminish frown lines or creases along the brow line or between the eyes.

Face and Neck Lifts. Another common complaint for older men is the “jowly” look that can occur as the cheeks begin to sag. Again, the culprit is decreased collagen production. This will also affect the skin on the neck. A Facelift and/or Neck Lift can be used to remove excess skin and gently stretch the skin to its normal position. The goal is to create a natural, healthy, younger skin tone – it should not pull the skin so taught that it appears stretched or shiny.

BOTOX®™ injections. BOTOX®™ injections have revolutionized the world of Cosmetic Surgery because they allow Plastic Surgeons to create significant improvements in regards to anti-aging treatments without using invasive surgical procedures.BOTOX®™ can be used in a variety of areas, most commonly the brow, around the nose, and the lips. It eliminates wrinkles and worry lines, smooths sagging skin, and re-plumps skin that may be sagging or deflating with age. BOTOX®™ injections can also be used to enhance lips, which can alter their shape with age, or can change as the result of long-time smoking. Many of our patients opt to use BOTOX®™ when they first notice the signs of aging on their face, and save more invasive Cosmetic Surgery techniques for when the signs of aging become more dramatic.

Best Places to Find Online Cosmetic Surgery Support and Information

If you are considering Cosmetic Surgery, it’s important to do your research and build a support network as you evaluate which procedures are right for you, and determine the shapes, sizes, and types of modifications you want to make. This is especially true when you are making changes to your face, which is your most familiar physical attribute. There are a wide variety of places you can find online Cosmetic Surgery support and information, but you want to make sure you are getting your information from reliable and educated sources, and not the sites that are wholly determined to sell-sell-sell, without presenting all sides of the story.

Here are some of the places we recommend visiting as you embark on your Cosmetic Surgery journey.

The American Board of Plastic Surgery. The website belonging to the American Board of Plastic Surgery serves multiple purposes. Firstly, you can verify the status of any Plastic Surgeon’s certification, ensuring that it is legitimate and up-to-date. Current certification demonstrates the surgeon’s dedication to remaining up to date on current industry research, technology, and standards. The site also has plenty of useful information about Plastic Surgery in general.

Plastic Surgery.org. In addition to helping you find a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon in your area, PlasticSurgery.org has very good, general information about a myriad of Cosmetic Surgery procedures, both cosmetic and reconstructive. They also have an extensive gallery of Before and After pictures, so you can get an idea of the types of procedures available, as well as how they can transform your face, nose, or body. Keep in mind that each surgeon has their own way of doing things, so while this site will give you good general information, only the surgeons you consult with can tell you exactly what would take place during your Cosmetic Surgery procedure.

Our website. Of course, we have to mention our own website, which is dedicated to providing accurate information about Facial Cosmetic Surgery procedures of all types. Some Cosmetic Surgeons want to glamorize the entire process, sharing only the good information and are not completely forthright about procedures, situations where Cosmetic Surgery isn’t feasible, or the complications that can arise. That being said, we believe the first step to a successful cosmetic surgical procedure is finding a highly- qualified surgeon who is fully committed to creating satisfying and long lasting results.

Prospective Surgeon’s Websites. Always visit the websites belonging to Plastic Surgeons who have been referred to you. This is your chance to get to know them a little bit before you schedule a consultation. Review their site with a keen eye and a discerning mind. Ask yourself the following questions:

  • What type of information do they have on their site?
  • Is it educational?
  • Do you get a good feel for the doctor’s attitude and approach?
  • Do they share information regarding both the benefits and the risks?
  • Are the services they provide in line with what you have read on other sites?
  • Is there a particular site you feel compelled to visit again and again because you are drawn to the information provided there?

The answers to these questions can help you narrow down the surgeons you want to meet with before making your final commitment.

Cosmetic Surgery After Breast Cancer

When most people think about Cosmetic Surgery after Breast Cancer, they immediately envision breast reconstruction surgeries, which are used to restore a woman’s feminine curves by recontouring the chest and providing new breast tissue, or implants, to replace the original breast tissue that was removed; however, the physical and psychological effects of surviving cancer go well beyond the mastectomy techniques that are used to remove the cancer from the body. Most women also undergo debilitating rounds of chemotherapy, which wreak havoc on their healthy cells, as well as the cancerous ones.

Once all of the treatments have ended, and a woman is given the coveted “Cancer Free!” pronunciation, there are years of check-ups and tests before she can feel safe that her body is truly “cancer free”. Cosmetic Surgery procedures can be used to help restore a woman’s youthful and healthy appearance, and to help her regain the sense of confidence and well-being that may have been lost during her journey.

Here are some of the cosmetic procedures that can help a woman embrace her new leash on life after breast cancer.

  1. A Less-Invasive Facelift. After all of the doctor’s visits and medical procedures involved with cancer treatment, many women are interested in less-invasive procedures that will still provide a dramatic outcome. The SLUPlift™ is a revolutionary Facelift procedure, invented by our own Dr. Oleh Slupchynskyj. It uses only a small incision, at the front and the back of each earlobe. Then, the muscles of the face are lifted and threaded in loop fashion to the jowl area. The results are a younger, and smoother face without a full surgical procedure:
    • The procedure takes only 1-2 hours and is performed using a Local Anesthetic.
    • The recovery period is only 5 days.
    • It has much longer lasting results than traditional Mini-Facelift procedures.
  2. Non-surgical Facelift. We can also use a combination of Botox® Cosmetic injections and other fillers to erase wrinkle lines, create fullness where skin has become less elastic or saggy, and to remove dramatic tear troughs and marionette lines. Botox® also has other beneficial side effects, including relief from migraine headaches. Dr. S. can even use non-surgical procedures for lip and nose augmentation. Within a couple of hours, your face can appear decades younger, ridding you of the worry lines and unappealing skin sag that may remain after long-term cancer treatments. Some of the other dermal fillers we use to perform a Non-Surgical Facelift include:
    • JUVÉDERM™
    • RADIESSE®™
    • RESTYLANE®™
  3. Rhinoplasty. Sometimes, patients who have undergone routine rounds of chemotherapy and surgical procedures for cancer lose their fear of surgery and take the proverbial bull by the horns. They figure if they had to undergo all that surgery for something they didn’t choose, they might as well enjoy Cosmetic Surgery to make improvements that they arein control of. One example of this is Rhinoplasty. A nose can become the bane of a person’s existence. After years of wishing your nose was different, why not take control of your face’s destiny and make it different? Whether you are interested in Ethnic Rhinoplasty procedures, or want to make small changes to your profile, the results will be a nose that enhances your facial proportions and allows you to smile back at your reflection.
  4. Mix-and-Match procedures. Other times, patients come to us because they don’t know exactly what they want, but they know they want something. During a consultation with Dr. Oleh Slupchynskyj, you can discuss the things you aren’t happy with, or you wish were different, and Dr. S. can tell you about your options. In many cases, our patients receive a combination of procedures to fix the features they aren’t happy with. This can include things like:
    • Brow lift
    • Lip Augmentation
    • Facial Contouring
    • Neck Liposuction
    • Face and/or Neck Lifts
    • Eyelid Corrections
    • Non-invasive Facelift procedures

These are just a handful of the procedures we use to restore youth and vitality to our patients.

5. Breast reconstruction. Women who have undergone a Single or Double mastectomy are often interested in Breast Reconstruction surgery. Breast Reconstruction Surgery has come a long way and women can enjoy the benefits of breast that look and feel natural. While we don’t perform this type of Cosmetic Surgery in our office, Dr. Slupchyskyj can provide you with referrals to some of the best Breast Reconstructive Surgeons in the industry.

The Real Deal – Cosmetic Surgery in Your 30s

The best method for approaching Cosmetic Surgery is a practical one: identify a problem area, or multiple problem areas, and then create a plan to fix them. It’s as simple as that. For many of our clients, the 30s bring about the first signs of aging. Perhaps the crow’s feet around the eyes have become a more permanent feature, as are the frown lines between the eyes and on the forehead. Lips can begin to thin and since skin elasticity is linked to aging, you may even notice a slight sagging in the brow line, cheeks or jowls. If this sounds familiar, now is the time to schedule a consultation with Dr. Oleh Slupchynskyj.

During your consultation, he can advise you regarding the Real Deal about Cosmetic Surgery procedures in your 30s. In fact, many of our younger patients are able to make an appointment for less invasive procedures, such as Botox®™ injections or Lip Augmentation, and can put off the more invasive surgeries for a few more years.

Here is a list of common Cosmetic Surgery procedures recommended in your 30s:

Rhinoplasty. If you still spend time staring at your nose in the mirror, and wishing it were different, now is the time to make the change. By the time you have hit your 30s, facial growth has been 100% complete for almost a decade. Why go another decade wishing your nose were a little fill in the blank, when you can make an appointment to get the nose you want right now? Dr. Oleh is a world-renowned Rhinoplasty Surgeon, who has revolutionized the process of Rhinoplasty using his SLUPimplant™, especially effective for Ethnic Revision Rhinoplasty procedures. During your consultation, you can see before and after pictures. Plus, you can envision exactly what you will look like using our computer imaging technology, allowing you to select the ideal nose for your facial proportions.

Botox®™ Injections. For most people in their 30s, decreased skin elasticity is just beginning to show. While a full facelift isn’t usually necessary, Botox Cosmetic®™ injections can go a long way towards restoring a renewed, youthful, and wrinkle-free face. Afraid that a Botox treatment will leave your face expressionless? Don’t be. Botox Cosmetic®™ is a brand name for a bacteria found in nature, called Botulinum Toxin Type A. This particular form of botulism partially paralyzes nerve endings, causing the creases in your forehead, brow, and face to relax. It allows your face to have a more smooth and youthful appearance, while maintaining natural muscular movement and expression. It usually requires about 24 to 72 hours for Botox Cosmetic®™ injections to take effect. Using this less invasive procedure can prevent your from having to undergo Cosmetic Surgery.

Lip Augmentation. You knew your skin would thin and our body would change as you grew older, but did you know that formerly plump lips can begin to thin out, becoming more linear than curved? This is especially true for those who have smoked in the past, or continue to smoke. Lip Augmentation can be used to inject the lips with dermal fillers that add volume and shape to thin lips. It can also help to fill in the smoking lines that form around the lips of longtime smokers.

Non-Surgical Facelift. If you are interested in more than one of our non-invasive facial enhancements, you may want to consider a Non-Surgical Facelift. This package was especially created by Dr. Slupchynskyj for women in their 30s or 40s who need a serious facial rejuvenation but aren’t quite ready for full Cosmetic Surgery procedures. It uses a combination of Botox®™,  Juvéderm™, Radiesse®™, and Restylane®™. The doctor will use these products to target the following areas:

•   Nasolabial Folds

•   Lip Augmentation

•   Marionette Lines

•   Tear Trough (Below lower eyelid, or lower eyelid hollow)

•   Nose Augmentation (Nonsurgical Rhinoplasty)

•   Liquid Facelift (Non-Surgical Facelift)

You will be amazed at the effects. Your Non-Surgical Facelift will allow you to put off more invasive Cosmetic Surgery procedures for another decade or two.

Can Plastic Surgery Improve Your Sex Life?

Recent studies show that Cosmetic Surgery procedures can improve your sex life. Multiple studies published in the Aesthetic Surgery Journal tracked patients after they had received various body contouring procedures. An overwhelming percentage of responses indicated these procedures enhance the patients’ sex lives as well as their interpersonal relationships. Not only are their own sex lives enhanced, studies show that the sex lives of their partners are also improved.

We have known for a long time that Plastic Surgery had a marked impact on our patients’ self esteem, but this is the first time that research has been used to correlate a relationship between an enhanced physical body, increased self-esteem, and a more satisfying sex life.

Self-esteem Plays a Critical Role in Your Sex Life

A satisfying sex life is dependent on several factors, including a positive body image, healthy self-esteem, and a general feeling of satisfaction regarding life in general. In an article titled, The Secrets to Maintaining a Healthy Sex Life, published on the Harvard Health Publications website, aging and the negative self-image that can develop as a result are noted as significant factors in the decline of a healthy sex life. The aging process can cause individuals to mourn the loss of their youth as well as the noticeable change in their physical features. This dissatisfaction with physical aging is enhanced by a culture that celebrates hyper-glamorized examples of human form. Perhaps you are dissatisfied by the way your body has gained weight, lost tone, or the wrinkles that have developed as skin elasticity decreases.

This dissatisfaction can lead to a type of body-image related depression. These issues can make a person so self-conscious that s/he no longer feels uninhibited in the bedroom. Plastic Surgery can use procedures like Face and Neck Lifts to remove wrinkles, breast augmentation, or liposuction, all of which can restore a person’s physical sense of health and vitality.

Of course, if your sex life is improving, so is the sex life of your current partner. Self-confidence is one of the most desirable qualities a person can have. We are all attracted to people who are comfortable in their own skin. When you use Cosmetic Surgery to enhance your physical appearance, and become more comfortable in your body, you will naturally become more desirable to others. This enhanced desire will increase their libido and will further enhance your sexual relationship.

Never Undergo Cosmetic Surgery for the Benefit of Somebody Else

While we feel this scientific evidence is exciting news for our patients, we would never advocate getting Cosmetic Surgery for the sole purpose of enhancing your sex life. It is important to us that our patients have a very specific, physical issue that they want to change. Perhaps they are tired of having a large nose or thin lips, and these features cause them to be self-conscious when they meet others. Maybe they are getting ready to attend their 50th high school reunion and would like to have some work done to erase unwanted frown lines. These are all anatomical issues that can be easily resolved using Plastic Surgery.

However, sometimes clients come to us because their significant other has requested that they make a change to their body or face. In these cases, we ask that our clients seriously consider their options before making a final decision. The effects of Cosmetic Surgery are permanent, and you should never make permanent changes to your body at someone else’s request. We have even been known to refuse to do a procedure if the doctor feels a patient is pursuing Plastic Surgery for the wrong reasons.

Is Cosmetic Surgery the Answer for You?

If you are in the process of determining whether or not Cosmetic Surgery is right for you, please ask yourself these important questions. Make an appointment for a consultation with Dr. Slupchynskyj so you can ask questions, and learn about the various procedures we offer, as well as their potential risks and side effects. Then you can take this information and discuss it with your partner. It is imperative that you feel 100% confident in your decision to have Plastic Surgery.

However, once your decision is made, the procedure is behind you, and your healing process is complete, you can enjoy the fact the fact that your self-confidence may be in for a major boost. And, if you’re like 96 percent of the respondents in the recent research studies, you and your partner will benefit from an improved sex life. That’s certainly something to look forward to!

Please contact the office of Dr. Oleh Slupchynskyj to learn more about the Cosmetic Surgery procedures we offer, and to schedule your consultation.

Can Plastic Surgery Improve Athletic Performance?

When most of us think about Cosmetic Surgery procedures, we immediately jump to those procedures designed to enhance a person’s physical appearance such as Face Lifts, Breast Augmentation, or Ethnic Rhinoplasty; however, there is another aspect of Plastic Surgery that is lesser known, and that is the use of cosmetic surgical procedures to improve athletic performance.

Athletes and workout enthusiasts require certain physical abilities in order to gain the most of their workout, this includes things like the ability to efficiently transfer oxygen to the brain and muscles groups, physical comfort, and a sense of self confidence that empowers them to continue working and training harder to meet their goals. Cosmetic Surgery can enhance all of these aspects, which, in turn, with enhances their overall athletic performance.

The following are some of the ways Plastic Surgery can increase your athletic performance.

Breathe in, breathe out. Respiration is arguably the most important involuntary action our bodies perform in order to keep us alive. It allows our lungs to be filled with oxygen-rich air that is then transferred from the alveoli into your blood stream. After the oxygen has been delivered to your cells, this process is reversed in order to release the byproducts, mainly carbon monoxide, back out into the atmosphere. If your body isn’t able to take in the oxygen it needs, and release toxic carbon monoxide, your body will begin to feel the effects immediately.

For athletes, even a slight disruption in the respiratory process can be detrimental to their sport or workout routine. Often, these issues crop up in the nasal passages, where narrow passages, anatomical obstructions, or other deformities prevent the nose from being able to suck in enough air to oxygenate the blood stream. Rhinoplasty can be used to restore normal breathing functions, enhancing the oxygenation process and improving overall performance. It is also critical in correcting sleep apnea, which can prevent athletes from getting the sound sleep they need to heal and revitalize their tired muscles.

Physical comfort. When you lead a physical lifestyle, it’s critical that you are comfortable in your body. For women, large breasts can become a detriment in sports. They are cumbersome and can be difficult to adequately support, even with the use of sports bras. Larger breasts are heavy, which make it more difficult for the body to maneuver agilely and can cause neck, shoulder and back pain. They also increase a woman’s body temperature, and are more prone to injury, which can cause further physical discomfort. As such, Breast Reduction is a popular Cosmetic Surgery option for female athletes with large breasts.

Self-confidence boost. When it comes to athletic performance, there is more at work than just your physical ability. Self-confidence and a positive attitude are also important components. We often encounter patients who long to workout at the gym, or get back to their favorite athletic past times, but their insecurities about their physical appearance prevent them from working out in public.

Cosmetic Surgeries, such as Face Lifts, Nose Jobs, Liposuction and Breast Enhancement procedures, can provide a much needed self-confidence boost. We have had many patients come back and report how their lives have been transformed after finally getting the Cosmetic Surgery they had been pining for. That being said, it is important that you get Cosmetic Surgery for the right reasons. Please read our post regarding the 7 Questions to Ask When Deciding if Cosmetic Surgery is Right For You before making an appointment for a consultation.

Do You Think Plastic Surgery Would Enhance Your Athletic Performance?

If you think your athletic performance would be enhanced by Cosmetic Surgery procedures, please contact the office of Dr. Oleh Slupchynskyj. We look forward to using Cosmetic Surgery to help you increase your athletic performance.

Talking to Your Kids About Cosmetic Surgery

The decision to have Cosmetic Surgery is a personal one. However, it also has an effect on friends and family members. Children can be the most impacted, especially if they are present throughout your post-surgical recovery period. While the immediate swelling and bruising is usually gone within the first week or so, it can take a month or two for more intensive healing to take place.

Unless a child is too young to know the difference, we feel it is important that parents are honest with their children about the Cosmetic Surgery procedures they are having, as well as what the recovery period will be like. If your children are going to be around immediately after your surgery, you will want to prepare them for the ways that you will look and feel differently, until your body has healed.

Here are common questions or topics you can expect to discuss with your children, depending on their ages.

Ages 3 – 10.

Question: Are you sick or hurting?

If children catch wind you are having surgery, going to a doctor, etc., they will worry that you are sick or something is wrong. You know the expression, “little pitchers have big ears?” Just because you haven’t spoken about the procedure to them, doesn’t mean they haven’t caught hints of it via your conversations with others. Make sure they know that there is nothing wrong with you, you are not sick, and that you aren’t in pain, but rather you are going to the doctor to help you feel even better than you already do!

QuestionWill you look different?

If your children will be around immediately after the procedure, you will want to prepare them for how you will look and feel differently. If you are having a Facelift, you will want to let them know what your face will look like for a little while after the procedure, (i.e. some bruising, swelling, and visible incisions). Depending on the child’s sensitivity, you can show them pictures. If they aren’t prepared, the results can be a bit alarming for young children.

QuestionWhy are you having surgery?

This can be one of the toughest questions to answer because you want to be as honest as possible, without setting them up to believe that Cosmetic Surgery is a requirement for physical and emotional well-being. Be honest and explain that as mommy/daddy has gotten older, there are some things you want to repair to make your body look the way it used to. This is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate their youthful, vibrant, and beautiful beings.

Children ages 10 – 16

Children who are 10 and older usually have a pretty good idea about what Cosmetic Surgery is and they may even have a general idea of what it entails. Cosmetic Surgery is everywhere in the media and public spotlight, which makes it easy for children to see information on T.V. and in magazines. Plus, they can also look up information online via a simple Google search; therefore, you have the ability to go into more detail about what you are doing and why.

QuestionWhat procedures are you having done and what happens during surgery?

There is a good chance your older children will want a more detailed answer regarding what procedures you are having, as well as what is done during the procedures. We have plenty of information on our site regarding each of the different types of Cosmetic Surgery procedures, as well as what can be expected before, during, and after.

QuestionWhy are you getting Cosmetic Surgery?

At the adolescent and teenage stage, reactions may be varied among your children. Some might cheer you on readily, and look forward for the results with you. Others might be scared, or may feel more vulnerable about their own insecurities during this tender time in physical development. Your child may even request that s/he be allowed to have Cosmetic Surgery as well.

Make sure you express the importance of growing fully into one’s own body before making the decision to change or alter things. You have waited a long time to decide whether or not Cosmetic Surgery was right for you, and it is in their best interest to become adults, and live life a little, before they make the same kind of permanent decision for their own bodies.

One thing is certain, your children can rest assured that you are in safe hands when you choose Dr. Oleh Slupchynskyj as your New York Plastic Surgeon. The Importance of Holistic Health on Cosmetic Surgery Success

While it’s easy to view your body one part at a time, it’s important to remember that each part is intricately connected to the whole. Your holistic health will have a direct impact on the recovery time and the outcome of your upcoming Cosmetic Surgery. Emotional well-being, lifestyle choices and nutrition all play a role in a complication-free procedure, quick recovery, and minimal scarring – all of which are important to achieve the vibrant and youthful glow you desire.

Here are tips on how to look and feel your best before, during, and after your Cosmetic Surgery.

  1. Have a positive attitude. Physical appearance can be enhanced using cosmetic procedures, but a radiant inner glow is something onlyyou have control over. Surround yourself with positive and supportive people, and be grateful for the simple things in life. Keep your chin up through the recovery process. Don’t feel like whiling away the recovery time at home? Some of our patients use this opportunity to relax in a New York hotel, pampering themselves with room service all week long!
  2. Make smart lifestyle choices. If you smoke, it’s imperative that you quit for the two weeks before and after your surgery. Smoking inhibits circulation, which is key to a healthy surgery and recovery. Smoking immediately after surgery can cause the tissue around your incisions to die, which will noticeably effect the outcome. Alcohol is a blood thinner, so limiting your alcohol consumption will help your blood to clot normally, reducing the chance of complications.
  3. Avoid vitamin E and ibuprofen. Vitamin E and ibuprofen are also blood thinners, which makes it difficult to stem the flow of blood when the doctor is making incisions.
  4. Take Vitamin C. Vitamin C is a wonder supplement; it boost the immune system and reduces swelling and bruising. It is a powerful antioxidant, inhibits cancer growth, and has additional anti-aging benefits. We recommend that our clients take 3000 mg per day. These should be divided into three 1000 mg. doses, taken morning, afternoon, and night. While you can use it for the period before and after your surgery, there’s no reason why this shouldn’t become a regular part of your dietary supplementation. Vitamin C is water soluble, so your body eliminates what you don’t need.
  5. Homeopathic Arnica. Arnica is a plant in the sunflower family. One of the species. Arnica montana contains a chemical called helenalin, which is a natural anti-inflammatory, especially adept at reducing the effects of bruising. Arnica has been used as a homeopathic remedy since the 1500s. Your local health food store will have Arnica tablets in their homeopathic section. Homeopathic Arnica can also be purchased online. Take it orally, as directed, for the first two weeks or so after your cosmetic procedure to reduce swelling and minimize bruising.
  6. Eat a well-balanced diet. A well-balanced diet is always a good thing, but it’s especially important when your body is healing. For enhanced post-surgical benefits, focus on eating an anti-inflammatory diet, which will keep swelling and bruising in check, and will boost your immune system. Many of our clients find they maintain an anti-inflammatory diet long after their Cosmetic Surgery because it can also reduce food sensitivities, increase energy levels, and help to improve joint pain. Reduce your intake of processed foods and sugars, and focus on whole foods, like fruits, vegetables, nuts, grains, and lean proteins.

By taking a holistic approach to your health, you will have the energy and vitality to enjoy the benefits of your Cosmetic Surgery procedure. For more information about pre and post-operative care, or to learn more about your Cosmetic Surgery options, contact the office of Dr. Oleh Slupchynskyj.
