Asian Nose Surgery, or Asian Rhinoplasty, is one of the most popular Cosmetic Surgery procedures in Dr. Oleh Slupchynskyj’s practice. A wide variety of his patients request sophisticated, distinctive results. Naturally, the perception of what is regarded as “beautiful” changes with time and with the influence of other cultures on one’s own. Cultural mixing between Asia and the Western world has influenced what patients consider an ideal nose in various countries. Many Asians think an attractive nose is one where the nasal dorsum is augmented and nasal tip is slightly more accentuated than one that is typically “natural looking” for a person of Asian descent.

The Asian nose has several distinguishing features when compared to the Caucasian nose or one of European descent. The Asian nose usually possesses thicker skin, with a deeper and flatter radix, and a lower or sometimes depressed nasal bridge. The tip of the nose tends to have a broad dome, while both the tip and the nostrils can be thicker skinned, wider, and have more fibro-fatty tissue than the Caucasian nose. The columella, or underside of the nose, also tends to be minimal.

Previously, the standard has been for Plastic Surgeons, typically General Plastic Surgeons, to perform Rhinoplasty on all patients in the same exact way regardless of their ethnicity. This made the noses of ethnic clients appear unnatural and unbalanced when compared to their other facial features and physical characteristics. Dr. Oleh Slupchynskyj, a New York City Rhinoplasty Surgeon and Dual Board Certified Facial Plastic Surgeon believes Asian Rhinoplasty, similar to many Ethnic Rhinoplasty surgeries he performs, requires advanced surgical skills that enable him to achieve very unique, custom-tailored results.

When an Asian patient considers Rhinoplasty, they typically are looking for more refined and augmented bridge, (i.e. slightly thinner and higher bridge). A more refined tip with increased projection is also popular. Adding definition to the bridge of the nose is often desired, in order to increase prominence in a natural way that is balanced to the rest of their face. Asian noses commonly have delicate cartilage, requiring superior skill to manipulate when making any alterations. The nasal bridge of an Asian person should start at or below the eyelashes, rather than higher towards the forehead as do many Caucasian noses.

Augmentation of the nasal bridge is best achieved by using the patient’s cartilage from the nasal septum or from the ears. Should the donor cartilage be insufficient or too flimsy for proper sustained augmentation, Dr. Slupchynskyj’s customized Silastic implant is advocated, as it is well tolerated by Asian noses, due to their thicker skin. Dr. Slupchynskyj’s surgical technique ensures the custom silastic implant is placed in the correct tissue plane and is sutured into place. Dr. Slupchynskyj never uses Medpor implants due to the known associated risks with this nasal implant. Dr. Slupchynskyj, an Asian Revision Rhinoplasty Specialist, has addressed various complications arising from tissue in-growth with Medpor implants, placed by another surgeon during Asian Rhinoplasty.
